Today I stumbled upon the work of Denis Darzcq, a french photographer based in Paris. His speciality are "floating people". Basically he's capturing single frames of jumps and falls but makes them look like they were floating. Awesome!

Twelve years after the Genocide

I shot these pictures in 2006 while working with aid workers from Care. It was a very moving assignment. You could feel the consequences of the genocide - even 12 years later.

Absence of Future: Children of Malawi

All pictures taken during my work with aid workers in Malawi, Africa two years ago. I will be back there later this year - hopefully things changed at least a little.

Larry Towell joined Magnum Photos in 1988 and became a full Member in 1993.

Swaziland has the highest rate of HIV infection in the world, with more than one quarter of its population infected. Some 130,000 children have been orphaned or made vulnerable by the death of one or both of their parents. With so many infected, AIDS is impacting every aspect of life in Swaziland.

Whenever you see something like above many start thinking "This looks like a movie scene". Instead of this they - while watching movies - should think "this looks like real world".

How come?

An example:

New York Times: Zoriah Miller, the photographer who took images of marines killed in a June 26 suicide attack and posted them on his Web site, was subsequently forbidden to work in Marine Corps-controlled areas of the country. Maj. Gen. John Kelly, the Marine commander in Iraq, is now seeking to have Mr. Miller barred from all United States military facilities throughout the world. Mr. Miller has since left Iraq.

The complex figurations, undulating arrangements of flesh, as the body seems to collapse onto itself, image an almost abstracted figure lacking appendages and hair. The physical structure becomes not just a shell, but a moving sculpture of skin, muscle, fat, and bone.

"Composed through a 4x5 view camera, I place the figure within the location and select an angle to shoot from. I remove furnishings to create a perspective which foregrounds the rudiments of the architecture, the light, and the figure itself. Each space is empty, but not anonymous. It is a setting not a set, within which the figure is grounded in a particular environment revealed by the traces of the doorway, ceiling, or floor. Suspended along the edges of the space, along the edges of figuration, these photographs also move along the edges of the photographic genres of narrative, portraiture, and environment." 90th Anniversary Of Nelson Mandela

90th Anniversary Of Nelson Mandela Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela born 18 July 1918 the first President of South Africa to be elected in fully representative democratic elections. Before his presidency, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist and leader of the African National Congress. He spent nearly three decades in prison for his struggle against apartheid. Through his 27 years in prison, much of it spent in a cell on Robben Island, Mandela became the most widely known figure in the struggle against apartheid. Among opponents of apartheid in South Africa and internationally, he became a cultural icon as a proponent of freedom and equality while the apartheid government and nations sympathetic to it condemned him and the ANC as communists and terrorists. Following his release from prison in 1990, his switch to a policy of reconciliation and negotiation helped lead the transition to multi-racial democracy in South Africa. Since the end of apartheid, he has been widely praised, even among white South Africans and former opponents. Mandela has received more than one hundred awards over four decades, most notably the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He is currently a celebrated elder statesman who continues to voice his opinion on topical issues.Read more...

"It's surprising that there are a lot of moments when it doesn't necessarily feel like you're in a war. The big American bases are trailer parks almost. You have a mattress and a bed, air conditioning, three meals a day, hot food and a lot of variety. Even when you're traveling, most of the time you get a lot of uncomfortable stares, but there's no constant violence anywhere in the city. Right now I'm in one of the more dangerous neighborhoods, but most of the times it's pretty quiet. A lot of the places where you expect violence, it comes very suddenly, which I guess is the nature of guerilla warfare because the insurgency is always calling the shots. It's been brief violence balanced by coddling living conditions. It's a weird living condition here, you don't feel like you're in a war but when you do, you really do."

Found at Magnum Photos:
Khem Sambo, 47 yrs, a journalist at the pro-opposition daily Moneaksekar Khmer (Khmer Conscience), was killed, together with his 21 yr old son, by five bullets fired in the middle of a busy street by a lone gunner on a motorbike near the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh on July 11th.

The reasons for this killing are not clear yet, and considering the previous murders of journalists (12 since 1993), they will probably remain obscure. It is too early and one can only speculate. Has it to do with the elections (we are two weeks away from the polling date)? Did Sambo know things he shouldn't have known about government involvement in casino gambling? But for sure Sambo's director, Dam Seth, who happens to be on the Sam Rainsy Party list (opposition) for the coming elections, is involved in a legal struggle with Foreign Minister Hor Namhong on issues about the Minister's alleged participation as a cadre in the Boeung Trabek reeducation camp during the Khmer Rouge regime. So was it to intimidate his boss that a good journalist and his innocent son were killed in cold blood on a busy street?

Whatever the reason, a journalist's assassination is always a serious matter. Especially so in a country where separations of the powers are not yet fully perceived by all as being essential to a workable democracy. Once the watchdogs will have stopped barking there will be few limits for abuse...

Just started to plan a cross-country road trip along the US-50, starting in Maine, driving south to Washington, DC and then west to San Diego and from there up to San Francisco, passing Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
